The Issue

Karliana Yosdeylin Perdomo-Gotopo came to the United States as a teenager from Venezuela with one goal: to build a life through hard work and education. She did exactly that. She graduated from Western High School in Detroit with honors. She earned an associate's degree at St. Clair Community College. She went on to become a senior business student and a member of the women's soccer team at Cleary University in Michigan.

She did not break the rules. Karliana was granted Temporary Protected Status — a legal designation given to people who cannot safely return to their home country — and formally applied for asylum in accordance with U.S. federal immigration law. She did everything right.

In late May, she was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine traffic stop. She is now being held at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan — the largest ICE detention facility in the state — while she waits for an immigration hearing.

"Karliana is someone who shows up for others, works hard and cares deeply about her education and her future," her teammates said in a statement. Cleary University President Alan Drimmer called her "a valued member of our campus community and our women's soccer program."

Detaining someone who followed the law — who pursued legal status, earned her education, and built deep roots in her Michigan community — is not justice. It is a punishment for doing things right.

We are calling on ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to release Karliana Perdomo immediately and allow her to await her immigration hearing at home, with her community behind her.
