Here is the 7 November update:
On September 13, Azerbaijan launched a totally unprovoked military aggression against Armenia using heavy artillery, rocket launchers and attack drones; they shelled 36 settlements of the sovereign territory of Armenia.
The Azerbaijani attack was deliberately directed against the civilian population and vital civil infrastructures. The total number of temporarily displaced persons from three provinces of Armenia was more than 7,600, mostly women and old people, 1,437 children and 99 disabled people.
The number of victims and missing persons as a result of the aggression has now exceeded 210, of which 3 civilians were killed and 2 are missing. 293 servicemen and 8 civilians were injured. The number of missing soldiers is 28. The Azerbaijani side itself spread shocking videos of torture, mutilation of the bodies of captured persons or already dead soldiers, numerous cases of extrajudicial reprisals and cruel treatment of Armenian prisoners of war, murders, as well as humiliating treatment of the bodies of the dead. The bodies of Armenian female servicemen were mutilated with particular brutality, and then “proudly” filmed by Azerbaijani soldiers. The footages of these apparent war crimes and crimes against humanity are being shared and praised by a number of Azerbaijanis on social media.
On September 14, a gruesome video began circulating on social media. In it Azerbaijani soldiers stripped a female Armenian soldier, raped her, wrote on her, put a rock in her eye socket, and put a severed finger in her mouth. Contract soldier has been identified as Anush Abetyan. She was killed in Jermuk, an Armenian city where Azerbaijani forces are currently attacking.
Eight months ago, Abetyan decided to join the military service, and before that she was engaged in farming. She joined the Armed Forces as a contract soldier and served in the Jermuk military unit. Abetyan was supposed to report for duty on September 24, but she reported on the night of September 13. Abetyan leaves behind three minor children: a 16-year-old daughter, 15-year-old son, and a 4-year-old son. She was born in Mrgashat village of Hoktemberyan city of Armenia’s Armavir region. The children are in the care of her parents and brother.
42-year-old Alisa Melkonyan died on September 13, 2022 as a result of Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia. The female contract soldier served in one of the highest and coldest positions in Armenia’s Gegharkunik region.
Melkonyan was seriously wounded during the 44-day war in 2020. She couldn’t walk for three months. After receiving treatment, she returned back to combat duty. She joined the service in 2016, after her brother was killed in the 44-day war. Melkonyan has another brother who has a disability.
On the very first day of the Azerbaijani aggression on 13 September, Susanna Margaryan went to the zone of military operations as a volunteer with her combat friends. They successfully carried out combat operations, defended the outskirts of Jermuk. The enemy was left to rely on drones, and Susanna and several other volunteers were killed by a "Bayraktar" strike. She was a veteran of the first and second Artsakh wars, and the 44-day war in 2016.
Details of atrocities committed by Azerbaijani forces during their attack on Armenia were presented to Armenia’s foreign diplomatic corps, who met with the Army Chief of Staff Edward Asryan in September in Jermuk, the site of some of the heaviest shelling. Members of Armenia’s foreign diplomatic corps were able to see first-hand the extent of damage that was caused to civilian and municipal structures. The ambassadors of the U.S., UK, France, Italy, EU, China, Argentina and Netherlands were among the group of envoys that included military attachés of other foreign embassies.
Undoubtedly, the perpetration of such indescribable atrocities is a direct consequence of the long-lasting policy of the political leadership of instilling hatred against Armenians and enmity in the Azerbaijani society. Several counties and international organizations were quick to condemn the atrocities depicted in the videos, however, we are still on the lookout for an appropriate response from these organizations that would put a stop to Azerbajian’s senseless violence.
With more than 38,000 people supporting British-Armenian’s petition across the world, we continue to campaign for the rights of servicemen and civilians, who still remain in captivity, and demand to:
- urgently send international monitors to meet Armenian hostages and POWs held in Baku;
- resolutely demand the immediate release of all civilians, hostages and POWs in accordance with the Geneva Convention on Treatment of Prisoners of War;
- condemn Ilham Aliyev’s family-run dictatorship for the continued contempt of international laws, human rights and obligations binding all UN member states, thus destabilizing wider regional peace.
Due to the lack of response on your side about our ongoing updates on
