Relax NEP 2020 Admission Age Criteria for Class 1 in Uttar Pradesh.

Relax NEP 2020 Admission Age Criteria for Class 1 in Uttar Pradesh.
The Issue
“Thousands of children in Uttar Pradesh lose a full academic year because of a rigid 1st April cutoff under NEP 2020. Let’s call for a 3–6 month relaxation so no child is left behind.”
My son, who was born in mid May, will be of 6 years age next year in May, & will have to face a significant delay in his admission to Class 1 due to the current age cutoff set by NEP 2020, which is 1st April. This situation will not only impact our family but countless others in Uttar Pradesh who share a similar predicament.
The National Education Policy 2020 was introduced with the vision of transforming India's education system. Under this policy, the admission age for Class 1 has been set to ensure that children have a certain minimum maturity level before they enter formal schooling. However, the current eligibility cutoff date of 1st April results in an unintended consequence of leaving many children, who narrowly miss this deadline, at a disadvantage.
In Uttar Pradesh, a child born just a few months after the cutoff date is forced to wait an additional academic year before starting formal education. This not only causes distress among parents but could also lead to children feeling left behind as their peers move forward. Given the varying developmental milestones in children, a rigid date restricts opportunities for those slightly younger children who are otherwise ready to begin their educational journey.
In numerous states and countries, similar issues have been addressed by adopting more flexible entry ages or offering a buffer period around cutoff dates. This approach acknowledges the diversity of child development without compromising educational standards.
We urge the authorities to consider an amendment to NEP 2020 by introducing a relaxation of 3 to 6 months in the admission age criteria for Class 1, specifically in Uttar Pradesh. Such a change would ensure equitable access to education for all children and align with the policy’s goal of inclusivity and accessibility.
Let's join together to call upon the state government and educational bodies to review and implement this much-needed change. Sign this petition to support the need for a more accommodating and flexible admission policy for our young learners in Uttar Pradesh.
“This petition specifically calls upon the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Department of Basic Education to relax the NEP 2020 Class 1 admission age cutoff by 3–6 months. The change will benefit thousands of children across the state who are otherwise forced to lose a full academic year.”
