The Issue

My child was born in June 2020 and is just 19 days short for admission to the 1st standard.(2026-27) She has successfully completed both lower and upper kindergarten and has demonstrated excellent performance throughout. She is both mentally and physically prepared for the next step in her education, yet due to the rigid age requirement of 6 years, she is unable to proceed with her peers.

Currently, the state of Karnataka strictly enforces a minimum age limit of 6 years for admission into the 1st class standard. However, many children like my daughter are adversely affected by this policy. They are forced to wait an additional year before starting their primary education despite being ready and eager to learn. This not only impacts their educational journey but also their social development as they experience an unnecessary delay, setting them apart from friends they have grown with through their early schooling years.

In many other states and countries, ages for school admission are more flexible, taking into account children's readiness rather than a strict age cut-off. Allowing children who are 5 years and 9 or 10 months old to enroll in the 1st standard could be a practical solution that benefits numerous families across the state.

Adjusting the age policy to allow admission for children who are close to their sixth birthday, yet have shown readiness and capability, will ensure that these young learners are not deprived of important cognitive and social development opportunities. This will align the state's policies with modern educational needs and realities, where a one-size-fits-all approach does not accommodate individual children's growth and abilities.

I urge the educational authorities in Karnataka to consider this request seriously and implement the necessary changes to the admission age policy. This change will be instrumental in fostering a more inclusive and flexible educational system.

Please sign this petition to support the call for change in the admission age requirements for 1st standard in Karnataka and make a difference in the lives of children and parents across the state.
