Against Turning Point USA: A Passionate Petition

Turning Point USA is widely described as one of the largest youth political organizations in the United States. The organization aims to educate young people about conservative politics and encourages student involvement through campus chapters, national events, and collaborative discussions on economic, racial, ethnic, and philosophical issues. Turning Point USA claims it is equipping its members to become proactive leaders who promote American ideals.

However, the national organization’s values and ideological positions raise serious concerns about whether it aligns with the core values of Elmhurst University. Elmhurst University's Student handbook emphasizes our firm commitment to providing "a welcoming community that values and embraces diversity and inclusion", while fulfilling our duty to "respect the dignity of every individual and promote responsible citizenship and civic engagement” (Elmhurst University 6).

Turning Point USA has publicly supported positions and rhetoric that many view as dismissive of these core principles, including opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, support for controversial political claims, and affiliations or statements that have been criticized as discriminatory toward marginalized communities. These positions risk creating an environment that undermines the sense of belonging and mutual respect that Elmhurst University seeks to uphold.

We, the undersigned students of Elmhurst University, respectfully request that the Student Government Association vote against the approval of Turning Point USA as an official student organization.

We urge SGA members to carefully evaluate whether this organization reflects the University’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and socially responsible campus community. Approving an organization whose values may conflict with these principles will negatively impact students who belong to communities directly affected by the issues and rhetoric associated with the group.

This is a pivotal decision that will ultimately shape the Elmhurst University community for future generations. The SGA will vote on this matter at the upcoming open meeting:

SGA Open Meeting

Thursday, April 2, 2026

11:45 AM – 12:45 AM

Blume Board Room (Frick Center, main level)

We encourage all students to act now—review this petition, consider the impact on our campus community, and make your voice heard.

Together, our collective voice has power.
