The issue

The residents of Bayswater and Maylands are facing an alarming proposal: the development of a fuel station at the intersection of Guildford Road and Kenilworth Street. This proposed development stands against the core community values of Bayswater and Maylands, and it brings with it significant risks that we cannot ignore.

One of the primary concerns is the potential health risk. Numerous studies have shown a direct link between proximity to fuel facilities and increased cancer risks. Benzene, a prevalent chemical in fuel, is a known carcinogen. This means that the proposed facility could significantly endanger the health of those in close proximity.

Additionally, the development will undoubtedly lead to an increase in traffic issues at an already busy intersection which already has regular accidents due to the lack of visibility over the blind crest, combined with an offset junction.

Bayswater and Maylands are a community that values safe family friendly streets and the wellbeing of its residents. Increased traffic that will use this fuel station on a 24/7 basis elevates the volume of traffic on adjacent residential streets, increases the risk of accidents and will further contribute to air and noise pollution, diminishing the quality of life for those residents near by.

This location of Guildford road is already known as being difficult to cross for pedestrians with numerous news articles and studies reflecting the lack of suitable crossings for pedestrians. Local council are already pushing to get improvements in this area, but adding this development to this intersection will increase complexity with traffic flow and make it harder for pedestrians to cross an already dangerous road.

The proposed facility does not align with our community's wishes for this site. It does not align with the values of our health, our safety, and our family friendly streets.

We, the community of Bayswater and Maylands, strongly urge the City and State Government of Western Australia to rethink this development plan and to consider alternative locations that pose fewer risks and align better with the community vision. We also ask that this location is instead developed with a solution that more suitably serves and aligns with the community values.

Please join us in asking for reconsideration of this development by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that our home remains a place where families thrive and community values are prioritised.
