The Issue

Nexus propose to introduce a charge of £1.80 per day  at the car park at East Boldon Metro station from 1 April 2026.

This car park has always been free to use since its opening and operates at capacity most of the time.

Residents in East Boldon already suffer from inconsiderate parking by drivers who use the metro station and park in the nearby streets. We consider that the introduction of parking charges will only make matters worse.

Furthermore, we feel that imposing charges for parking at metro stations will only serve to discourage the use of public transport, which is contrary to Nexus’ public transport strategy for Tyne and Wear.

In addition, the proposal will add to the financial burden of commuters (we estimate up to £400 per annum), many of whom are struggling with the cost of living.

We demand that Nexus reject the proposal to introduce car parking charges at East Boldon Metro station and to commit to the continuation of free car parking facilities at this location.

I am grateful to,John Temple, pictured in the photo, for his help with this issue. John is the Prospective Labour Candidate for the Cleadon Village and East Boldon Ward in the local elections in May.

John has taken a number of actions including writing to the Managing Director of Nexus, the North East Mayor and the Leader of South Tyneside Council.

He raised the issue at the recent meeting of the West Shields, Cleadon and East Boldon Community Area Forum (CAF) and helped persuade those Councillors to write to Nexus with their concerns.

I will keep you informed in my updates of any future responses received.
