Reject the Plea Deal for Cody Roberts in the Wyoming Wolf Torture Case

Reject the Plea Deal for Cody Roberts in the Wyoming Wolf Torture Case
The Issue
We respectfully ask the Court to reject the proposed plea agreement in the animal cruelty case involving Cody Roberts and the prolonged torture and killing of a wild gray female wolf in Wyoming.
The proposed plea agreement is currently pending court approval, and the Court has the authority to accept or reject this agreement. This petition addresses the Court’s decision regarding the proposed plea deal.
According to publicly reported information, Cody Roberts struck a wild gray wolf with a snowmobile, leaving the animal severely injured and reportedly paralyzed. Instead of ending the wolf’s suffering, the animal’s snout was taped shut and the injured wolf was transported to the Green River Bar.
Over the course of many hours, the wolf was allegedly subjected to prolonged mistreatment. Reports indicate the animal was dragged into the establishment, restrained, and abused before ultimately being shot and killed.
Photos, witness accounts and reporting indicate that this abuse continued for hours while the animal remained alive and conscious.
This conduct represents prolonged and deliberate cruelty, not a momentary act.
Under Wyoming law, felony animal cruelty charges can carry significant penalties including 2 years in prison and $5,000 in fines. However, the proposed plea agreement would result in:
Approximately 18 months of probation.
A $1,000 financial penalty.
No prison sentence.
Many citizens believe this resolution does not adequately reflect the severity of the alleged conduct.
The public is also deeply concerned that:
The abuse reportedly occurred inside the Green River Bar without apparent legal consequences for the establishment.
Public officials were allegedly present or aware without intervention.
The prolonged nature of the abuse demonstrates intentional cruelty rather than negligence.
These concerns have drawn national attention and widespread outrage among citizens who believe animal cruelty laws exist to protect vulnerable animals from exactly this type of conduct.
Wildlife is part of Wyoming’s natural heritage and is held in trust for the public. The deliberate torture of a wild animal is not simply a private matter; it affects public confidence in the enforcement of animal cruelty laws.
This petition is not intended to interfere with the judicial process, and we respect the role of the Court.
However, we respectfully request that the Court decline to approve the current plea agreement and allow this case to proceed in a manner that fully reflects the seriousness of the alleged conduct.
Extreme cruelty deserves meaningful accountability.
Respectfully submitted by concerned citizens.
