Reject the NSW Energy Legislation Amendment(Prioritising Renewable Energy) Bill 2026
The issue
Growing up on the land in New South Wales instilled in me a profound respect for our environment and the critical need to preserve it for future generations. The land is not just a resource; it is our home, our heritage, and our identity. We are now faced with the prospect of the NSW parliament passing the Energy Legislation Amendment (Prioritising Renewable Energy) Bill 2026, a piece of legislation that threatens that very heritage.
This bill, as it stands, grants excessive power to a single individual at the state level to move forward with significant renewable energy projects without appropriate scrutiny and input from local communities and governments. It undermines the principles of democracy by bypassing the voices and concerns of the people who will be most affected by these projects—our local communities. Our participation is not just a right; it is essential to ensuring that these projects are safe, effective, and considerate of the local environment.
Particularly concerning is the proposal to build Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in vulnerable areas such as Talbingo ( the site pictured above for an 450MW battery array) and it’s major water catchments. It is an ill-considered plan, as these systems can be strategically located elsewhere along the grid without risking our invaluable environmental resources.
Decisions that shape our future must be made collectively and transparently, taking into full account the local context and the potential impacts on our ecosystems. It is crucial that thorough due diligence and comprehensive assessments precede any decisions.
We must unite to urge the NSW parliament to reconsider and reject the Energy Legislation Amendment Bill 2026. Let’s safeguard our lands, ensure transparent decision-making, and uphold democratic values.
Join me in saying NO to this bill. Sign the petition to protect our environment and our rights to be heard. No Talbingo Battery!
