Reject the AI data campus in our town
The Issue
Our small town has managed just fine without a looming technological blob like an AI data campus. For years, we've lived in harmony with our environment, cherishing the clean air, fresh water, and the natural beauty that surrounds us. But now, we are faced with the threat of irreversible damage to our town’s ecosystem and wellbeing if we allow an AI data campus to establish itself here.
Data centers are notorious for their massive energy consumption and significant impact on local environments. According to a report from the Uptime Institute, data centers worldwide will use about 20% more electricity each year. This excessive use will inevitably lead to increased carbon emissions, contributing directly to the already worsening climate crisis. Heat waves, which are projected to become 10 times worse, will be exacerbated by such developments, putting the health of our community at risk.
Moreover, the forecast for our water supply looks bleak. The need for cooling data centers leads to increased water usage, which can deplete local water supplies and reduce water quality. A 2019 New York Times article highlighted that some data centers consume up to a million gallons of water a day. Our town’s precious water reserves could be drained for the sake of data storage.
Economically, the promises of job creation and economic growth that typically accompany projects like these do not outweigh the environmental cost. Our town's economy has thrived on sustainable practices, and the introduction of such a facility would alter this balance, potentially causing irreversible damage to our local industries and way of life.
As citizens who value quality and sustainability over short-term financial gain, we must stand together to prevent this AI data campus from being built. Our future, and the health of our environment and community, depend on us taking a stand today.
Please sign this petition to stop the establishment of an AI data campus near our town. Together, we can protect our environment and preserve the integrity of our community for future generations.
