The Issue

The United Kingdom has a proud history of providing refuge to those fleeing persecution and hardship, but the current proposal to use RAF Barnham in Suffolk as a camp for asylum seekers raises significant concerns that must not be overlooked. RAF Barnham, situated in a rural area, is not equipped with the infrastructure or resources necessary to support a temporary community of asylum seekers adequately.

Firstly, the location itself poses logistical challenges. RAF Barnham is isolated, with limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and public transportation. This isolation would significantly impede the ability of asylum seekers to integrate and become self-sufficient, prolonging their dependence on government support.

Furthermore, the local community is predominantly residential, and the sudden influx of a large number of individuals could strain public services and impact community cohesion. Residents of Suffolk have expressed concerns about the potential increase in demand for local amenities and the capacity of emergency services to handle a larger population.

Alternative solutions, such as utilising urban sites with better infrastructure and access to services, should be considered. Cities and towns with vacant buildings or underutilised spaces could provide a more suitable and humane environment for asylum seekers to rebuild their lives.

We deeply sympathise with those seeking asylum and believe in the importance of providing them with the support they need. However, RAF Barnham is not the right location for such a significant undertaking. We urge the authorities to explore other options that would better serve both the asylum seekers and the local community. Please sign this petition to reject RAF Barnham Suffolk camp from use for asylum seekers and advocate for a more appropriate solution.
