Nevada voters are being asked to amend the state constitution to ban transgender students from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. This measure is being pushed by Governor Joe Lombardo and political allies, even though Nevada already has policies in place and there is no evidence this is a real or widespread issue in our state.

In 2022, Nevadans voted to add strong equal rights protections to the constitution. Those protections guarantee equal rights regardless of gender identity. This new ballot initiative would directly undermine that decision and carve out an exception that singles out transgender students.

This proposal is not about protecting sports. It is about politics.

There is no clear data showing that transgender athletes are impacting fairness or safety in Nevada schools. Even the organizations that oversee school sports say they cannot identify how many transgender athletes exist because the number is so small. Turning this into a constitutional fight harms real students for political gain.

Transgender students are already among the most bullied and isolated young people in our schools. Measures like this increase stigma and send a message that they do not belong. School sports should be about teamwork, confidence, and community, not exclusion.

Changing the state constitution is a serious step. It should not be used to target a small group of students or to override protections voters approved just a few years ago.

We urge Nevada voters to reject this ballot measure and stand by the values of fairness, dignity, and equal treatment under the law. Protecting civil rights means protecting them for everyone, even when it is politically inconvenient.
