Reject Indiana’s Gerrymandered Map Before It Becomes Law

Reject Indiana’s Gerrymandered Map Before It Becomes Law
The Issue
Indiana lawmakers just admitted what we already suspected: the redistricting map that state Republicans just proposed is all about raw political power.
During the only public hearing—announced with less than a day's notice—Rep. Ben Smaltz, the bill’s author, openly said the map was drawn “purely for political performance” to secure a 9-0 Republican congressional delegation. That’s not just undemocratic—it’s a slap in the face to the millions of Hoosiers whose votes are being sliced, diluted, or erased.
This map would obliterate competitive districts, split Marion County into four separate districts, and gut Indiana’s two racially diverse Democratic districts currently held by Reps. André Carson and Frank Mrvan. The new 7th District would carve up the heart of Indianapolis—where Carson is the state’s only Black federal officeholder—and bury its voice under rural districts that share little in common with the city’s needs.
Even Marion County’s own Republican former Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann called out the injustice, reminding lawmakers they swore an oath to represent all Hoosiers, not just those who vote red.
Local election officials have warned this rushed process will bring chaos. Marion County Clerk Kate Sweeney Bell testified that changing districts with just four months until early voting will overwhelm her office, risking widespread confusion, poll worker shortages, and voter disenfranchisement.
This isn’t just bad politics. It’s bad governance. And it’s being pushed at the direct urging of national figures like Donald Trump, who demanded GOP-led states redraw maps to guarantee more Republican seats in Congress.
We still have time to stop this.
We call on the Indiana Senate and Governor Mike Braun to reject House Bill 1032. These maps do not reflect Indiana’s people—they reflect a rigged game. Fair maps are the foundation of democracy, and Hoosiers deserve better than a partisan power grab masquerading as representation.
Join us in demanding a veto of this undemocratic map before it becomes law.
