The Issue

I keep thinking about what drag really is and why so many of us keep showing up. For me, drag is part of a legacy. Everybody who does drag in any kind of way is part of that history. And even with shame, trauma, ridicule, and judgment still living on our bodies, we still get up and do it again.

That matters because drag is not just a costume, a show, or something easy to dismiss. We are risking ourselves to be laughed at and judged, and yet we still show up to entertain, to inspire, and to help people heal. I truly believe drag artists give people space to see something in us they have not yet figured out in themselves. When lawmakers target drag, they are not just attacking a performance. They are attacking art, community, resilience, and a form of healing that so many people need.

That is why I am calling on lawmakers to reject drag bans and protect drag as a legitimate art form and community expression. Stop passing or supporting policies that single out drag performances simply because some people are uncomfortable with us existing in public. If something is truly about safety, then write content-neutral rules that apply equally to everyone. Do not use vague laws to erase drag artists, silence queer expression, or push our communities further into fear.

We have already carried enough shame and survived enough judgment. We should not have to beg for the right to create, perform, and exist. If you believe art matters, if you believe healing matters, and if you believe communities deserve to gather without being singled out, please sign this petition.
