The Issue

Our neighborhoods in Dallas are meticulously designed with alleyways to avoid the unsightliness and disruption of having trash bins cluttering the front of our homes. This well-thought-out urban design ensures that our streets remain clean and aesthetically pleasing, while also maintaining a sense of community pride. However, the recent proposal by Dallas Sanitation Director, Clifton Gillespie, to eliminate alleyway trash collection threatens to dismantle an integral part of our neighborhood's infrastructure.

Transitioning to front-of-residence trash collection is not just a cosmetic issue; it poses significant challenges, particularly for seniors and individuals with physical limitations. Many residents in our community, who currently rely on the convenience of alleyway collection, will face increased burdens. The change will require physically moving trash bins long distances, which is not feasible for everyone. It unjustly places the onus on some of our most vulnerable community members.

Furthermore, the city is tasked with maintaining our alleyways, which include ensuring cleanliness and accessibility. Should trash collection shift from alleyways to streets, this responsibility may be neglected, leading to the deterioration of these shared public spaces. The alleyways, which are currently active parts of our waste management plan, risk becoming neglected and unsafe.

The city's role should be to augment services, not diminish them. Maintaining alleyway trash collection is vital to sustaining the quality of life in Dallas, protecting the environment, and preserving the aesthetics that we all cherish.

Support us in urging the Dallas city officials to reject this proposal. The needs of our community must come first. Let's ensure that our voices are heard and our neighborhood's design is respected. Sign the petition to preserve our way of living in Dallas.
