Did the Bahia Mar Deal Sink the Boat Show? Dean Trantalis was the only commissioner to oppose the bad Bahia Mar deal. As mayor, he will work to save the imperiled Boat Show. Dean stood up to Bahia Mar's developers: Dean cast the only vote against the development. No to building an apartment complex on public land. No to more traffic. No to harming the Boat Show. His opponent, Bruce Roberts, supported the deal, ignoring public opinion. He even hired Bahia Mar's lobbyist to run his campaign. Dean's fears are proving true: The Boat Show may be in jeopardy. Organizers suddenly want $2 million a year in assistance from the county's tourism office. It's the first time in history they've made such a request. You got to wonder why. Dean will demand transparency: The developers of Bahia Mar are keeping a new lease arrangement they made with the Boat Show a secret. They don't want you to know what it says. We need to see it and judge for ourselves if the Boat Show can survive. Dean has demanded the city attorney obtain the agreement and release it. Dean will protect our marine industry: The marine industry is a major part of our economy and employs thousands of people. The Boat Show is a cornerstone of that industry and is one of the premier shows in the world. The marine industry and the Boat Show are essential to our community's character and must be protected.
