Our son, a bright and wonderful child, has autism, which makes certain adaptations to his schooling both necessary and beneficial. The current structure of a six-hour school day is overwhelming and challenging for him, and consequently, for our entire family. We wholeheartedly support him participating in the special education program offered by his school, but the lengthy hours make it difficult, and it's heart-wrenching to have him away for such an extended period with no viable alternative.

Many families in Oak Harbor, WA, share this sentiment and face similar challenges. Kindergarten marks a significant transition, and not all children are ready or able to cope with full-day sessions. Numerous studies indicate that children, particularly those with developmental differences, can benefit significantly from shorter school days. This allows them to gradually adjust, ensuring their well-being and academic success.

Reintroducing half-day kindergarten classes would provide parents with the flexibility to choose the best option for their children. It's essential to create a supportive learning environment that acknowledges and respects the diverse needs of our children. Many other districts across the nation offer both full and half-day options, recognizing the value and necessity of inclusivity in educational settings.
