Without any consultation or warning, they withdrew the opportunity for Step 6 Under 18s teams to enter the FA Youth Cup. This decision has left a gaping hole in the development pathway for many young players and clubs in the National League System (NLS) pyramid.

As someone deeply passionate about youth football, I am keenly aware of the dream that many players hold—playing in the FA Youth Cup. It is a revered competition that provides young athletes a platform to showcase their talents, gain invaluable experience, and pursue their aspirations of reaching higher leagues. For countless youth teams, especially those from smaller communities, participating in this tournament was more than just a match; it was a significant event that motivated players, coaches, and entire communities.

Now, hundreds of youngsters are denied this pivotal opportunity. By excluding Step 6 teams, the FA has inadvertently created a barrier in talent progression and club development. Step 6 teams play an essential role in nurturing talent that might otherwise be overlooked, and their exclusion deprives young players of exposure to higher levels of competition.

In the 2018-2019 season, the FA Youth Cup featured teams from all levels of the pyramid, providing a holistic view of the landscape of English youth football. These grassroots teams contributed to the diversity and success of the competition. According to various sources in youth football media, participation in such competitions positively influences player skill levels, mental strength, and career opportunities.
