The Issue

For generations, the sound of the chimes at Newchurch Parish Church have been an integral part of our community’s identity. The chimes have marked the passing of hours, called neighbors together for worship, and provided comfort in times of reflection.
They are more than just a tradition — they are a living part of our shared heritage.

Following a recent noise complaint, the chimes have been silenced. While we respect the rights of all residents to peace and quiet, we believe the chiming of the bells, is a treasured and irreplaceable part of community life. Removing them entirely diminishes our cultural fabric and erodes a tradition that has brought meaning to countless residents for decades.

We urge Warrington Borough Council to reconsider the restrictions and allow the chimes to ring again, with consideration for reasonable hours and volume levels that balance tradition with modern life.

The bells are a valued symbol of our community’s history and unity.

Reasonable accommodation can ensure the bells continue without causing undue disturbance.

Silencing them entirely sets a precedent for the loss of cultural traditions that define our town.

We therefore request that the ringing of the chimes at Newchurch Parish Church be reinstated without undue delay.
