Reinstate Weekly Bin Collection in Thurrock

Reinstate Weekly Bin Collection in Thurrock
The Issue
As residents of Thurrock, we have experienced the detrimental effects of Thurrock Council's decision to switch from weekly to bi-weekly bin collections. Our bins are overflowing with waste due to this change. This is not just an inconvenience; it's a health hazard and a blight on our community's image.
The switch from weekly to bi-weekly collections has led to an increase in littering and fly-tipping incidents. According to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), such changes can lead to increased instances of improper waste disposal. There were over 1 million fly-tipping incidents reported across England in 2019/2020 alone. While not all these cases can be attributed directly to less frequent bin collections, it is clear that inadequate waste management contributes significantly.
Moreover, overflowing bins attract pests such as rats and foxes which pose a risk to public health by spreading diseases like leptospirosis or toxocariasis. The British Pest Control Association warns that rat populations thrive where rubbish accumulates.
This is not just about aesthetics or convenience - it’s about public health and preserving the integrity of our environment. We urge Thurrock Council to reconsider their decision and reinstate weekly bin collection services for the sake of our community’s wellbeing.
Please sign this petition if you believe in maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in Thurrock. Together we can make a difference!
