The Issue

We urgently need your help to address a critical situation affecting our community and its animals.

On Guam, there are an estimated 70,000 dogs on an island with just 150,000 people. Saipan faces a similar challenge with 20,000 dogs and a population of 45,000. Our shelters are overwhelmed, local adopters are scarce, and shelter euthanasia rates exceed 90%—a stark contrast to the highest euthanasia rate in the continental U.S. (Texas at 18.6%).

A significant factor contributing to this crisis is United Airlines' discontinuation of pet shipping services in 2018. This decision was made following several high-profile incidents, including the tragic death of a French bulldog placed in an overhead bin by airline staff. As a result, 40% of pets surrendered to Guam's animal shelter are due to families relocating and unable to bring their pets.

Despite countless efforts over the past three years, including hundreds of emails and arranged meetings between United Airlines and our local government, there has been no progress.

We are reaching out to you, seeking your assistance in the following ways:

Raise National Media Attention: United Airlines has shown that financial implications of bad press influence their actions more than the wellbeing of living beings. Help us get our story into the national spotlight to apply pressure for change.

Write to United Airlines: Their motto is "Good Leads The Way," and they claim that "Integrity fosters corporate and individual success." We urge you to contact their Ethics and Compliance office at Ethics@united.com and file a report. More information can be found here.

Provide Plane Access: If you have access to a plane and are willing to help transport dogs, your assistance could save many lives.

Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of thousands of animals and families in Guam and Saipan. Thank you for your consideration and any assistance you can provide.
