As a student in Miami, I have experienced firsthand the inconvenience and impracticality of using clear or mesh book bags. These types of bags are not nearly as durable as regular book bags. I find myself having to purchase at least two new ones each school year, while my old Jansport bag has lasted me through four years without even a tear.

This is not just about durability, but also about personal expression and creativity. A normal book bag allows students to express their individual style and personality which is an essential part of their growth and development. Each and every book bag is different which shows the uniqueness of every students styles.

Moreover, the argument that clear or mesh book bags increase safety by preventing weapons from being brought into schools is flawed. The reality is that these types of bags do not effectively deter such actions.

According to a study conducted by National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), there's no evidence indicating that metal detectors, security cameras or clear backpacks will prevent school violence incidents (NASP 2018). Instead, they recommend focusing on measures that help build relationships among students and between students and adults.

We need our schools in Miami to understand these facts and reconsider their policy on regular book bags. Let's stand together for practicality, personal expression, creativity - for our right to use regular backpacks!
