The Issue

As a passionate angler, fishing is not merely a pastime but a way of life that connects me to nature and fosters a sense of community among fellow enthusiasts. With the advent of technology, drones have become an invaluable tool in the sport of surf fishing, allowing for greater precision, reach, and enjoyment. However, the state of Texas has recently banned the use of drones for surf fishing and bait release, a decision that affects thousands of anglers who cherish these advanced methods.

Fishing, whether for sport or sustenance, has long been regulated by measures such as size limits and catch restrictions to ensure sustainability and conservation of marine resources. These regulations are critical and have been effective in maintaining fish populations for future generations. Drones, when used responsibly, do not contravene these conservation efforts but rather enhance the experience, allowing anglers to comply with existing guidelines more effectively.

The ban on drones does not take into account the evidence showing that technology can coexist with environmental conservation. Advanced tools have allowed anglers to target specific species and reduce bycatch, thus aligning with conservation goals. By leveraging technology, we can minimize human impact while maximizing the enjoyment and cultural significance of fishing.

This not only imposes safety risks for fishermen who will seek to use alternative methods such as swimming, wading or paddling a kayak but will have tremendous impact on the local economies of fishing communities. Anglers that visit to spend the weekend fishing will likely no longer participate due to the ban of drone usage. Bait and tackle shops, local restaurants and businesses will suffer with the lack of patrons visiting their shops.

There are alternative approaches that the state can consider. For instance, implementing certifications or permits for drone operators to ensure they adhere to ethical fishing practices, or conducting workshops to educate anglers on the responsible use of technology. By collaborating with local fishing communities, Texas can create a balanced framework that respects traditional practices and embraces modern tools.

This isn't just about convenience - it's pushing anglers toward riskier methods like swimming out to place bait, and coastal businesses will suffer with fewer patrons visiting their stores.

I started a petition asking the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to reconsider this ban. Drones actually help with conservation by allowing precise targeting and reducing bycatch. Instead of an outright ban, we could have certifications or permits to ensure responsible use.

Anyone else think there's got to be a middle ground here that works for everyone? If this matters to you too, consider signing and

We urge the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to reconsider this ban. It is crucial to establish a dialogue that recognizes both the heritage of fishing and the potential of new technologies. Please join us in calling for a fair and informed policy that reinstates the use of drones for surf fishing in Texas. Sign this petition to support the harmonious integration of tradition and innovation in our beloved sport.
