Reinstate the Sr Football program at Bayside Secondary School
The Issue
For many of the students at Bayside Secondary School, football has been more than just a sport—it's a vital part of their education and development. Sports like football play an essential role in boosting self-esteem, reducing stress, and teaching invaluable life skills such as resilience, leadership, and teamwork. It's through the shared struggles and triumphs on the field that friendships are forged and character is built.
Today, the students of Bayside Secondary learned that their beloved Senior Football program has been cancelled. The administration cited reasons such as insufficient practice attendance and a lack of players to form a team. However, these claims don't paint the full picture. We have 28 regular practice attendees and 35 students who have shown their willingness to play. Moreover, the decision overlooks the enthusiasm of a female athlete whose offer to join the team was unfortunately dismissed.
This decision not only impacts the students but the community as a whole. The football program has long been a source of pride for Bayside, providing a platform for students to showcase their skills and bring the community together. Generations of alumni can attest to the positive impact this program has had on their lives, both on and off the field.
Rather than canceling the program, we should be working together to address and overcome the challenges presented. Perhaps the issue lies not in a lack of interest but in scheduling conflicts, lack of communication, or other administration-related factors that could be improved.
I propose setting up a meeting between the school's administration, concerned parents, and students to explore plausible solutions like opening more recruitment opportunities within the school, adjusting training schedules to better fit students’ commitments, and creating an inclusive environment where all athletes, regardless of gender, are encouraged to participate.
We need your support to bring back our football program. By signing this petition, you're standing up for our student athletes, promoting inclusivity, and helping us revive a cherished tradition that benefits our community on multiple levels. Sign today to help the students of Bayside Secondary School get back on the field and continue building futures through sport.
