To the parents with children in the Haddonfield School District and specifically the Haddonfield Memorial High School, like many parents, we worry about the safety and security of our children. Recently, the decision was made to let go of the only School Resource Officer (SRO) in our district due to financial constraints. It's a decision that has left many of us concerned. The school resource officer provided services to all of the schools, not just the high school. 

In today's world, the presence of a School Resource Officer is not just beneficial; it's essential. These officers play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for our children. They are trained to handle emergencies, intervene in altercations, and provide a trusted presence that students can turn to in times of need. Statistics have shown that schools with an active SRO report fewer incidents of violence and have a more effective response to emergencies.

Last year alone, schools across the nation reported an uptick in safety concerns, making the presence of a dedicated officer all the more important. In fact, the National Association of School Resource Officers reports that their presence reduces the likelihood of serious incidents.

The decision to remove the SRO due to budget cuts is understandable on paper to balance a budget, yet we must explore alternative solutions to safeguard our children. Reinstating the SRO might require re-evaluating budget allocations, applying for specialized grants, or seeking community support through local businesses and stakeholders. The safety of our children is worth every effort.

Parents, teachers, and residents of Haddonfield, NJ, let us come together to urge the school district to find the necessary funds to bring back our beloved School Resource Officer.
