Reinstate the Press 3 LGBTQ+ Youth Option for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

Reinstate the Press 3 LGBTQ+ Youth Option for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
The Issue
For so many individuals in crisis, having a supportive and understanding ear at the other end of a phone call can be the difference between life and death. This petition calls for the reinstatement of the United States National 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline’s “Press 3” option for LGBTQ+ youth ages 25 and below. LGBTQ+ youth face unique challenges and stressors, and the recent removal of the Press 3 option connecting LGBTQ+ youth with identity-affirming counselors has left a vulnerable group without the specialized assistance that they deserve.
Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth are at a much higher risk for mental health disorders and suicidal ideation due to discrimination, bullying, and lack of family support, among other factors. According to The Trevor Project's "National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health 2021," 42% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. The availability of targeted support through an option like Press 3 can mean the difference between life and death.
Implemented in July of 2022, through the Congressional “National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020” (S.2661), the Press 3 option provided LGBTQ+ youth with a safe space to connect with counselors specially trained to understand their life experiences, fostering a sense of trust and warmth that is often lacking in general helplines. In fact, surveys of LGBTQ+ youth who contacted queer-friendly crisis hotlines show that many of them would have chosen not to call for help if a hotline with identity-affirming counselors were not available.
The Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has the power to rectify this oversight by reinstating the Press 3 option on the National 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. We want the Trump administration to listen to mental health experts, social workers, LGBTQ+ advocates, and the countless voices of youth who have relied on this lifeline. Let's stand together to ensure that the National 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is fully equipped to support every youth in need, without exception.
Please sign this petition to urge the Trump administration to make a change that could save millions of lives and provide equitable mental healthcare for all youth. Your signature can help make a difference in the lives of many young individuals desperately seeking acceptance and support. Together, we can advocate for a more inclusive and responsive mental health network for everyone.
