As someone who grew up with the wake of the internet I have made many Western friends, I experienced first-hand the struggle of having my name mispronounced or even replaced with a more 'convenient' Western alternative because I felt I should not make it hard for them. Yet I was expected to pronounce my friends’ names correctly, because “everyone knows it”. After years I finally found the courage to keep my name and ask for the same courtesy I was giving.
I really do not subscribe for most of the things people say it’s cultural appropriation, I like to share my culture, our clothes and way of life, most Arabs, and Muslims would say the same. 
but when it comes to names, they are the identity of a person, they hold weight especially within the Arab, Persian and Muslim communities, we often can go back to our sixth or seventh grandfathers from memory and more from books that map our families.
on Wikipedia - the cultural erasure of two prominent scholars, Ibn Sina and Ibn rushd. Their names have been westernized to Avicenna and Averroes respectively, which not only strips them of their Muslim, Arab and Persian heritage but also distorts historical accuracy.

These scholars are renowned for their immense contributions to philosophy, medicine, mathematics among other fields. Yet when you see a book titled “Averröes on Plato’s Republic”, one might wrongly assume it's about a Roman philosopher's opinion on Greek philosophy. This is just one example that illustrates how such cultural appropriation can lead to confusion and misinterpretation.

Wikipedia's excuse is that these are their known names in the West (“just like Germany is not called Deutschland”). However, this argument does not hold water as it takes only a few generations for new names to be recognized widely if they are used consistently (eg. Europe and USSR recent history). By continuing with this practice, we risk erasing these scholars from their history and identity.

We urge Wikipedia to respect the original names of these scholars by reinstating them in all English versions of their pages. Let us honor them properly by acknowledging their true identities rather than simplifying them for convenience sake.
