The Issue

When the Pittsford School District decided to opt out of the National lunch program years ago, it was with promises of reducing food waste, offering a wider range of menu choices, and providing healthier meals sourced locally for our children. As a concerned parent in Pittsford, NY, I have witnessed first-hand that these promises have not been kept. Instead of the nutritious and wholesome meals we were led to expect, our children are faced with meager and often unhealthy options nearly everyday. Our children are hungry and feel compelled to buy extras, which add up financially but not nutritionally. Parents of older students remember much larger meals and healthier options before this decision was made.

Other than “bowl days,” my children come home hungry and frustrated; having been served small portions including a mere five baby carrots in a plastic cup, a bagged waffle, a hamburger with no toppings, chicken nuggets or a corn dog. In elementary, as seen in the photos, a meal could be nothing more than sugary treats like sweetened yogurt paired with canned fruit. These options are far from the balanced and nourishing meals our children deserve and need for their growth and learning.

A study conducted by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) confirms that school meals are crucial for student success, both in terms of health and academic performance. By rejecting federally supported meal guidelines, we are denying our children these proven benefits.

In addition to getting better meals, now that NY state has approved a universal lunch program, the decision to opt out will also impact our pocketbooks. Pittsford families could save thousands of dollars per year if we reverse this decision.

I urge the Pittsford School District to reverse their decision to opt out of the National School Lunch Program. Reinstating this program will help ensure our children aren’t hungry and will be receiving the nutritious meals they rightfully deserve, at no additional cost to our families.

Please sign the petition to call for the reinstatement of the National School Lunch Program in Pittsford schools. Our children deserve better. Please get involved to urge them to make these changes before the next school year.

 Thank you.
