Like many others, I grapple every day with the fiscal policies affecting my daily life. It is for this reason that I strongly urge the United States to put us, its citizens, back onto the Gold Standard. While this may seem lik a dramatic change, it is a shift necessary for the financial stability and predictability that we all so desperately seek. From 1879-1971, our country operated under this standard, which guaranteed that the U.S. dollar was backed by its equivalent in gold. However, when President Nixon abolished this standard, the dollar became fiat money - no longer backed by physical reserves. This opened the doors for inflation and uncertainty, impacting our economic stability. Reverting back to the Gold Standard will not only restore this stability, but would also ensure a tangible limit to the amount of money that can be printed, thus preventing uncontrollable inflation.
