Reinstate the Free Fremantle Cat Bus Service

Reinstate the Free Fremantle Cat Bus Service
The issue
The free Fremantle CAT bus was a vital connection for locals, visitors, and tourists. Its free service made it anyone to explore Fremantle without worrying about bus fares. Since the service stopped, residents and tourists have lost an accessible option that supported mobility and local businesses.
The Fremantle CAT bus was discontinued after operating for over two decades because its funding and fleet reached a breaking point. The City of Fremantle withdrew its share of the cost in May 2023, following a 30% projected rise in expenses funding the service. Transperth also pulled back, indicating it would reallocate its funding rather than fully fund the shuttle. With no replacement vehicles and two key funders stepping away, leading to the decision to end the CAT and reallocate funding towards the 532 bus route. The Fremantle CAT was relatively well-used and aligned with demand for free travel between South Beach and Fremantle. Restoring a similar service would support the local economy and make Fremantle more appealing to visit with public transport.
We call on the City of Fremantle, Transperth, PTA, and the Labour government to work together to fund and establish a frequent, integrated Fremantle Cat bus that meets the needs of residents and visitors.
Let’s keep Fremantle connected and thriving with a free public bus that works for everyone!
