NOTE: This petition was updated as of Tuesday, May 12th at 5:30 PM. The author was honest to the best of their knowledge in the original petition description; however, we have since received updated information about what chorus at West Rowan High School will look like next year and have updated key details of the petition, including who to contact with questions and concerns.

In my high school years, the chorus program was more than just an extracurricular activity; it was a haven. At West Rowan High School in Mt. Ulla, North Carolina, it provided a safe space for students like me to belong, grow academically, and express themselves. From learning music theory to mastering the complex harmony of choral music, every moment spent in that classroom was invaluable. It cultivated not only our talent but also our confidence and camaraderie.

The impact of the performing arts on students is profound. Multiple studies highlight that involvement in music education can lead to improved academic performance, better memory, and heightened creativity. According to the NAMM Foundation, schools with music programs have significantly higher graduation rates than those without. Moreover, chorus programs foster teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, which are essential skills for life beyond the classroom.

However, this vital program is drastically shrinking, leaving a void in the lives of many aspiring young musicians at West Rowan High School.  For several years, West Rowan High School has maintained a robust choral program, offering several chorus classes and multiple performance opportunities tailored to different ability levels and musical styles. The choral program is sadly shrinking to a club that will be offered for only twenty minutes a week. If a choral class is even offered next school year (we are not sure yet whether this will happen), there will likely only be one section offered and  it will not be taught by a dedicated chorus teacher.  This decision to shrink what was a robust, varied choral program to a shell of what it once was affects not just the students currently enrolled, but also future generations who will miss out on the opportunity to explore and develop their talents.

We believe that all students have the right to a well-rounded education, and the arts are an integral part of this. Keeping the chorus program thriving will ensure that students continue to benefit from the myriad advantages it offers, from personal growth to academic success.

We urge West Rowan High School to reconsider their decision. Let us invest in the future of our children by restoring this essential program. Please sign this petition and help us bring back the robust chorus program that West Rowan High School has offered for years, paving the way for the voices of tomorrow.

Since the original post, we have learned that this decision came from Principal Dylan Johnson and not the Rowan-Salisbury School Board. We apologize for our initial error. Please contact Mr. Dylan Johnson with any questions and concerns.

Thank you for your support.
