Reinstate the CCHS Band Director Position to Full-Time
The Issue
UPDATE 10:45pm May 29: we have already exceeded 1,600 signatures in less than four hours! In that same time, almost $1,200 has been given to promote this petition, but zero of the 12,000+ views generated from promoting this petition has resulted in a signature. Please be aware that you are giving money to Change.org and NOT toward this cause, and there is nothing I can do as the organizer to stop the website from advertising its promotion service. Please hold on to any donations until this situation develops further.
The Cooper City High School Sound of Pride Marching Band and Color Guard is in danger of being eliminated. The band director position has been cut to part-time because of "low enrollment" and budget cuts from the district. While the band director being part-time does not necessarily eliminate the marching band program, it is functionally impossible for a part-time position to lead after school programs. This puts in jeopardy the regular activities of the program, such as football games, services to the community, competitions and festivals in state and out of state, and local and national parades.
The Sound of Pride has a storied history reaching back over 50 years. The band has decades and decades of awards, from local competitions to nationally televised parades. The color guard regularly attends the national competition in Dayton, Ohio, and places among the best in the country. Alumni of the program are military band members and successful music teachers ranging from K-12 schools to major universities. Professions outside of music include many STEM fields from medical to engineering. Some even do both music and medical. To jeopardize the future of this program is to wipe a gem of Broward County and the state of Florida off the map.
We need your help in showing Broward Schools administration the mistake that this is.
