The Issue

The aquatic cycling class at our local Don Nash community center has been more than just an ordinary workout for me; it's been a lifeline. This class became a part of my weekly routine, offering me an essential outlet for both physical exercise and mental rejuvenation. Aquatic cycling provided a unique combination of low-impact yet highly effective exercise, which was crucial for my joint health and overall well-being. The endorphins released during these sessions helped alleviate my stress and significantly improved my mood.

Recently, I was devastated to learn that this beloved class was canceled, cutting off a crucial source of physical activity and mental health support. This decision didn't just impact me but also affects countless others who relied on this class as a part of their health regimen. For many of us, the aquatic cycling class wasn't just about physical health; it was a community fostered by encouragement and shared goals.

Statistics show that regular physical activity can reduce risk factors for several chronic diseases and mitigate the mental health impacts of stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly can lead to substantial health benefits. Aquatic cycling was an important vehicle for achieving these health benchmarks, especially for those of us who find regular gym workouts challenging or harmful due to joint pain or other constraints.

The class also strengthens community connection, Don Nash serves as a gathering place where residents can build relationships, encourage one another, and stay active together.  For many seniors, individuals recovering from injuries, and neighborhood fitness enthusiasts, the aquatics cycling program at Don Nash is an essential part of daily health. The cancellation of this program disenfranchises a group that relies heavily on such opportunities to stay active and connected.

We propose the Chicago Park District to work collaboratively with the City of Chicago to explore alternative funding options or adjusting the schedule to accommodate this class. Reinstating the aquatic cycling class will not only serve my individual well-being but will also demonstrate a commitment to supporting a vibrant, healthy community.

Please join me in urging the local Don Nash community center to bring back the aquatic cycling class. Your signature could make a difference in restoring this critical resource for our well-being. Sign and support our community's health today.
