Reinstate the A1A Sidewalk to Saint Edward's School: Protect Our Children's Safety

Reinstate the A1A Sidewalk to Saint Edward's School: Protect Our Children's Safety
The Issue
Over 30 children live in Seagrove neighborhood along State Road A1A in Vero Beach and many attend Saint Edward's School, located directly across this busy road.
FDOT originally planned a sidewalk on the east side of A1A that would connect our neighborhood to a new crosswalk at the school traffic signal – providing a safe walking route for the first time.
After a campaign focused on landscaping and neighborhood aesthetics, FDOT revised the plan. The sidewalk will now end 1,100 feet south of our community entrance. The school crosswalk will still be built, but our children will have no safe way to reach it.
Every day children, adults, and families must dodge traffic to cross A1A to get to the sidewalk on the west side of the road. This is not hypothetical.
FDOT designed the sidewalk specifically to improve pedestrian safety. Child safety should not be sacrificed for landscaping preferences. The infrastructure work is already underway – the fix is simply extending the sidewalk as part of Project 449818-1.
We urge FDOT to reinstate the full sidewalk connection from Seagrove to the Saint Edward's School crosswalk.
