Reinstate the 1880s Cottage at Glenwood Cemetery.
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully call upon the leadership and trustees of Glenwood Cemetery to reconstruct the historic Victorian cottage that once stood on the cemetery grounds and to ensure its long-term preservation for future generations.
The cottage was an important part of Glenwood Cemetery's historic landscape and contributed to the unique character, architectural heritage, and sense of place that have made Glenwood one of Houston's most treasured historic sites. Its recent removal to an off-site location represents the loss of a tangible connection to Houston's past.
We believe that reconstruction of the cottage presents an opportunity not only to restore a significant historic feature, but also to demonstrate Glenwood's continued commitment to preserving Houston's history.
Accordingly, we urge Glenwood Cemetery to:
• Reconstruct the Victorian cottage on or near its original site using historically appropriate designs, materials, and architectural details whenever feasible.
• Install a permanent historical marker and interpretive plaque detailing the cottage's history, architectural significance, and role within Glenwood Cemetery, and pursue appropriate historic preservation protections for the reconstructed structure.
• Consider one of the many adaptive reuse opportunities for the cottage, such as a chapel, educational center, community gathering space, or café where families and visitors may convene before or after services and events.
• Name the cottage "Ambrus Cottage" in honor of Richard Ambrus and his dedication to preserving the beauty, history, heritage, and character of Glenwood Cemetery for future generations.
By signing below, we support the reconstruction and permanent preservation of the 1888 Victorian Office Cottage at Glenwood Cemetery.
