The Issue

Taryn Asher gave nearly two decades of award-winning journalism to the people of Detroit. Now, Fox 2 Detroit has pushed her out — and the reason appears to be her gender.

Asher filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in March, alleging that Fox 2 gave her male co-anchor more opportunities, more desirable assignments, and a more accommodating schedule. When she raised those concerns — verbally and in writing — the station didn't fix the problem. It made things worse. Her responsibilities were cut. She was accused of being unprofessional. She was subjected to what her attorney calls a baseless "investigation." Then she was suspended and fired.

This is textbook retaliation. And it has no place in any newsroom.

Asher joined Fox 2 in 2007 and became one of the station's lead anchors in 2022. She earned 10 local Emmy Awards for her reporting. She built trust with Detroit viewers over nearly two decades. None of that protected her once she asked to be treated the same as her male colleague.

What happened to Taryn Asher is not just one woman's story. It's a pattern that plays out in newsrooms across the country — women doing equal or better work, getting less in return, and then facing consequences when they dare to say so. Broadcast journalism cannot keep rewarding this behavior with silence.

We are calling on Fox 2 Detroit and its parent company to reinstate Taryn Asher immediately, conduct a transparent review of how female anchors and on-air talent are treated compared to their male counterparts, and commit to equal opportunity — in assignments, scheduling, and advancement — for all employees regardless of gender.

Detroit is watching. And so is the rest of the country.
