Reinstate Study Leave at Chadwell Heath Academy for GCSE Students
The Issue
As a student at Chadwell Heath Academy, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision to remove study leave during our crucial GCSE period. This decision not only impacts our academic performance but also negatively affects our mental wellbeing during an already stressful time.
Study leave is not just a break from school; it's a vital time for us to revise and prepare for the most important exams of our lives so far. The absence of this dedicated study period could significantly impact our grades, potentially affecting future college applications and even job prospects.
Many statistics and expert opinions show that students who have adequate revision time perform better in their exams (source: Department of Education). By removing study leave, the school is denying us this advantage and potentially jeopardising our GCSE results.
It could also be argued that the decision to remove study leave during the GCSE period not only affects academic performance but also disregards the importance of creating an optimal revision environment. While school provides a conducive learning environment, it may not be the best place for intensive revision, especially during stressful exam periods. Many students find studying in crowded, high-pressure environments uncomfortable and distracting. Allowing students the flexibility to revise in their preferred environments, such as at home, can alleviate stress and enable better focus overall allowing them to perform better academically and helps them to gain better handling of their academic stress.
A further follow up point could be considered that Mr Poddington is changing the schedule making it so that core subject teachers are teaching you right before that particular core subject exam, conversely though, I believe this is of no particular help, as teachers target the average learning pace of the class so it would only better a fraction of the students and it could also be very time inefficient as it requires communication and this could be coupled with the fact that core subjects will overshadow any optional subjects people have chosen, as core subjects are prioritised even though someone may wish to seek a career in that optional subject.
Lastly, students will not be able to use their phones to access online resources or their home computers but you may ask "surely there's computers at school?" The computers at school are very slow and some information may be blocked as well as the school's search filter is not very efficient so overall the technological resources that the school offers is not suitable for our needs.
Ultimately, due to these points I believe that removing study leave is detrimental and deleterious to us students of Chadwell Heath Academy and so study leave should be reinstated for our collective betterment.
