We want to thank everyone for your continued support. Since launching this campaign, we have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and press for action. Here’s a summary of what has been done so far:
✅ What’s been done to date
- Petition launched – now passed 700 signatures and growing every day.
- Local press coverage – featured in the Daily Record / Lanarkshire Live with photos showing children on the route.
- Broadcast media – STV and That’s TV Scotland now engaged, with interview dates confirmed.
- Political engagement – MSP Màiri McAllan, Cllr Elise Frame and Cllr Susan all contacted; Cllr Susan has raised the route with Roads officers.
- Community involvement – photoshoots arranged, residents and parents showing visible support for the campaign.
- Evidence gathering – measured footpath widths (2m at Sandford end, narrowing to ~80cm near Strathaven), highlighted lack of lighting, barriers, crossings, and impact of flooding/ice.
- Freedom of Information (FOI) action – FOI template shared for parents to request councillor decisions and route safety assessments.
- Graphics and materials – posters, comparison photos (lit vs unlit), and shareable campaign visuals created to spread the message.
- Social media presence – launched Facebook page Sandford Safety First – School Transport Campaign to centralise updates.
🔄 Currently in progress
- Ongoing engagement with councillors and Roads officers for a proper safety reassessment.
- Requesting details of any surveys carried out at school travel times.
- Preparing further press/media pieces to keep the issue visible.
- Coordinating with parents and residents to maintain community pressure.
🚦 Next steps
- Push for a council site walk along the route during dark/wet conditions.
- Continue building press coverage and petition momentum.
- Demand clear answers on safety improvements (lighting, barriers, crossings, wider paths, speed reviews).
- Keep working with elected representatives to bring the issue to full council level.
