As you might have heard, Professor Ken Levy had all of his classes pulled this week for making political statements in the classroom. A student, who was upset by what Professor Levy had to say, reported him to administration. Administrators said they are required to remove him from the classroom while they investigate the complaint. We strongly urge LSU to reconsider their position.

To discipline a faculty member for making political statements sends a dangerous message to students and faculty, both current and prospective. How can we recruit the best and brightest faculty from around the country, if professors believe they will be punished for their views? How can expect to foster a challenging learning environment for students, if we are not allowed to debate the important issues?

Freedom of speech cannot be sacrificed for the comfort of a few students. Freedom of speech must be protected.
