Reinstate Princess Peach as Damsel-In-Distress in the Mario Cinematic Universe

The Issue

Growing up, Mario and his quest to always save Princess Peach from the clutches of evil has been an iconic part of many of our childhoods. It has always been a simple story of love, perseverance and bravery, showcasing Princess Peach in the classic damsel-in-distress role. However, the recent shift of making Princess Peach a wartime general in the Mario Cinematic Universe does not sit well with many of us, as it goes against the character we've grown to cherish.

Princess Peach, introduced in 1985's Super Mario Bros, has always been portrayed as the softer, balancing personality within the strong masculine environment. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Mario Franchise, envisioned her as a character to be saved, keeping her role significant in its own way. But now, our beloved princess being changed to a wartime general is not only stepping away from the foundational story, but it is also blurring the fine line that separates Mario's universe from the others.

Despite some feeling that pitting her as a damsel-in-distress is boring, a 2018 study from University of Wisconsin-Madison found that, childhood stories with consistent characters help in enhancing creativity and cultural knowledge (University of Wisconsin, 2018). Therefore, maintaining Princess Peach in her original role is not just about preserving traditions, but also about sustaining a cultural phenomenon that has impacted millions around the world.

We request the creators of the Mario Cinematic Universe to honor Princess Peach's original role. Let us bring back the Mario universe we are fond of and show the world that a character doesn't need to wield weapons to be significant.

Thus, return Princess Peach to her damsel-in-distress role. Sign this petition, and let's rally for consistency in the Mario Cinematic Universe.

Peach is one-dimensional, but so are Mario, Bowser, and Toad (somehow, spending time with a spooked Luigi in a mansion makes him more relatable). Peach may be little more than a trophy, but Mario isn’t some chauvinistic male power fantasy. He’s just an empty, colourful vehicle which we use to explore Miyamoto’s worlds
