Growing up in the vibrant city of Lincoln and enjoying its green open spaces has always been a cherished part of my life. Like many residents, I have witnessed our beautiful parks and urban environments slowly becoming hubs for anti-social behaviour since the unfortunate budget cuts in 2013 that led to the removal of the dedicated park and urban rangers.

The presence of rangers is vital in maintaining the safety and allure of our open spaces. These professionals serve as guardians of our parks, deterring potential troublemakers and ensuring that the community feels secure while enjoying these areas. They provide an essential service by not only maintaining order, but also by fostering a sense of community and stewardship among residents and visitors alike.

In recent years, reports of vandalism, litter, and nocturnal disturbances have increased, leaving many families and individuals feeling unsafe and reluctant to use these public spaces. This trend is not just disheartening but has broader social implications, reducing the quality of life for Lincoln’s residents and diminishing the sense of community that these spaces should provide.

Research supports the effectiveness of having patrolling rangers in decreasing crime rates and enhancing public safety. A study conducted by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has found that cities with dedicated park rangers see lower instances of crime and heightened community engagement. This evidence aligns with what we, the residents of Lincoln, have observed firsthand: our parks have lost their vibrant, welcoming atmosphere in the absence of regular ranger oversight.

Reinstating park and urban rangers will not only revitalise these spaces but also restore peace of mind for residents, who deserve to feel safe in their own neighbourhoods. We believe that Lincoln City Council has the power to make a substantial positive impact on our community by reversing the cuts made in 2013 and prioritising the well-being and safety of its citizens.
