The Issue

For years, the original Pride schedule provided us with two periods blocked together to allow flexibility and productivity. As a student at our school, these periods were essential in enabling me to meet my best buddies at activities, complete my assignments, and actively participate in clubs that are important to my personal and academic growth. The new changes with the Wildcat Workshop and ABC lunch schedule have radically altered our ability to use this time effectively, and I'm not the only one who feels this way.

The Wildcat Workshop, introduced this year, limits us to a single 30-minute block that is rigid and doesn't accommodate the unique needs of students. For instance, many students can't meet with their assigned best buddies because our schedules no longer align. Clubs and activities that were once an integral part of school life have become increasingly difficult to attend. Instead of fostering a collaborative and enriching school experience, these changes have hindered our ability to manage our responsibilities and engage in extracurriculars effectively.

Additionally, the ABC lunch schedule has been highly disruptive. Under this system, instructional time is unfairly segmented, particularly with the B lunch intervening in the middle of periods. Students in other slots are forced to wait three-quarters of the day before eating, which impacts their ability to concentrate and participate fully in afternoon classes. This interruption not only affects our learning but also shifts the focus away from the critical continuity of our education each day.

Research overwhelmingly supports the importance of well-structured academic schedules in enhancing student performance. A report from the American Educational Research Association suggests that well-timed breaks like those in the original Pride schedule can increase student engagement, retention, and achievement. By maintaining a schedule that respects these times, we can ensure an equitable and effective educational environment for all students.

It's crucial for the school administration to listen to our voices and understand that these new changes are not serving the best interest of the students. I urge the school to revert to the original Pride period schedule, reinstating the two-block period and adjusting the lunch periods to facilitate a more equitable, manageable, and academically beneficial structure.
