Reinstate Original 'Bridgerton' Showrunner/ Greenlight a Separate LGBTQ+ Series
The Issue
I have long been a lover of stories, particularly those that carry a message resonating with the masses. For me, it has been necessary that the adaptations retain the essence of the original material that has already established an abundance of fans. Bridgerton being the most recent and highly popular book to screen adaptation. However, my desire is not only about preserving its integrity but also about diversity in storytelling, and whose stories should be told. It's glaringly clear that we need more LGBTQ+ stories, which absolutely deserve their platform but never at the expense of the existing beloved material.
Our plea here is twofold. Firstly, we demand the reinstatement of the original 'Bridgerton' showrunner, or someone with a similar vision and goal, ensuring that the series adheres closely to its source materials. It would bring back the essence of what Bridgerton is known for; the romance and focus on one Bridgerton sibling at a time, the musical pairing that enhances the emotions that are being felt in the plot(not a random pitbull song to a steamy scene), and especially providing the full background so we can understand these characters in more depth. This is the true soul and draw of Bridgerton, the emotional investment into a couple.
Secondly, we seek to give Jess for her own series centered on LGBTQ+ narratives. I don’t think she is bad at her job, I think she has stories she wants to tell but hasn’t received the proper platform to do so. I understand her desire to have queer characters represented, as someone who is part of the queer community myself, we desperately desire to have ourselves seen. However not at the expense of the original source material. I think Jess could have her own show instead of changing the literal plots of the Bridgerton Siblings, that Julia Quinn already established and people have fallen in love with.
We need both stories told, but separately. Keep the original plots of the Bridgerton siblings. Treat them with the love that we saw in season one and two, as well as Queen Charlotte. Queerness can be threaded in as we already saw, but again, not at the expense of changing one’s entire trajectory in order to include queerness.
At the very least, Jess needs to be removed from show runner of Bridgerton before even more changes occur to the show.
