Reinstate Mixed Martial Arts in GCSE Physical Education

The Issue

My son has been committed to Brazilian jiu-jitsu since he was 6 years old. He has grown physically and mentally stronger, demonstrating great skill and dedication. He is currently in year 9 at high school, and is eager to take his passion for mixed martial arts into his GCSE's. However, with deep regret, we discovered that mixed martial arts have been removed from the list of sports eligible for GCSE PE.

This single decision has hindered the dreams and aspirations of not only my son, but also countless other young talents. Mixed martial arts isn't just a sport; it's a discipline that trains both body and mind while building grit, resilience, and team spirit. According to a report by The Guardian, martial arts are marked by low injury rates compared to other physical activities and heightens discipline and self-confidence among peers (The Guardian, 2010).

It is unjust and unreasonable to not recognise and offer this sport in GCSE PE. By doing so, we confine the opportunities for our children and limit their potential. This is a call to the examination boards, school authorities, and anyone else involved, to reinstate mixed martial arts in GCSE Physical Education. We believe in promoting a diverse range of sports to encourage our children to explore their interests and talents.

Please support this petition and allow our children to realise their potential. Together, we can ensure a broader, more inclusive range of sports in GCSE PE, which brings enormous benefits to our youngsters' well-being and development. We need your signature to make this change possible.
