The Issue

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Madison City schools made the decision to remove student lockers as a part of their strategy to maintain social distancing and reduce the spread of the virus. Initially, this seemed reasonable. However, as we transition back to normalcy, it has become increasingly clear that the decision to keep lockers out of our schools is causing more harm than good.

Students are now forced to carry heavy backpacks filled with textbooks, notebooks, and laptops throughout the entire school day. The physical burden is taking a toll on young backs and shoulders, leading to chronic pain and potential long-term health issues. According to a study from the American Academy of Pediatrics, carrying heavy backpacks can result in posture problems, scoliosis, and muscle fatigue. Our students deserve a safe learning environment that doesn't compromise their physical health.

Furthermore, without lockers, students have no safe place to store personal belongings or items necessary for extracurricular activities. This leads to an increase in misplaced or stolen items, adding stress and anxiety to the school experience.

Reinstating lockers would alleviate these issues. It would not only provide relief to students from the physical strain and offer a secure place for their personal items, but also foster an environment that supports both academic and extracurricular endeavors.

We call upon the Madison City School Board to prioritize the well-being of students by bringing back lockers in all city schools. Doing so would demonstrate a commitment to student health, safety, and success.

Please join us in urging Madison City schools to take immediate action to reinstate lockers by signing this petition. Your support is crucial for the future health and happiness of our students. Together, let's shoulder the burden and bring lockers back.
