The Issue

At the March 18 council meeting, a vote was taken on whether to allow live streaming of public work sessions. The vote resulted in a tie, and Mayor Marie Galate cast the tie-breaking vote against permitting live streaming, thereby preventing the public from viewing these meetings remotely.
All residents deserve equal access to information about their local government, regardless of whether they can physically attend meetings at the municipal building. Many individuals— including homebound residents, seniors, those unable to drive at night, and residents whose work schedules prevent in-person attendance— rely on live streaming to stay informed.
As a direct result of this decision, the public will be unable to view the upcoming budget work session, where critical discussions regarding the use of tax dollars take place.
The council members who voted against providing this transparency were:
 • Mayor Marie Galate
 • Council President Steve Kucevic
 • Councilman Anthony Bongiovani
 • Councilman Jonathan Taylor
These are public meetings, and every resident should have the opportunity to hear the discussions and provide feedback.

We urge every resident to sign this petition and hold those who are trying to keep us in the dark fully accountable for their actions. Restricting access to public meetings is not only unethical—it’s a shameful betrayal of the full transparency they explicitly promised us with our own tax dollars. This blatant hypocrisy and contempt for the public’s right to know cannot be tolerated any longer. Demand better, or they’ll keep doing it.

I was one of the three council members who voted yes on live-streaming our public work sessions. These meetings are supposed to be open to the public. That means every single taxpayer in our town should be able to see what’s actually happening without having to physically show up at 7:30 p.m. on a weeknight. We can’t expect people to drop everything to sit in a meeting room for hours. They have jobs, families, and lives. Live-streaming isn’t some fancy tech idea… it’s common sense and those who are physically disabled rely on this. If we’re making decisions with their money, they deserve to watch it happen in real time. When we shut the public out, it doesn’t build trust, it raises eyebrows. I really hope my colleagues will rethink this and do the right thing, especially since we campaigned on transparency. Our residents aren’t the enemy, they’re the reason we’re here. Let’s let them in. I’ve seen the petition calling to reinstate live streaming for Hopatcong’s public work sessions, and I’m fully aware of the concerns it raises. Many residents — including seniors, homebound individuals, shift workers, and anyone who simply can’t make it to the Municipal Building in person — rely on live streams to stay informed about how their tax dollars are being discussed and spent. The recent 4-3 vote at the March 18, 2026 Mayor/Council meeting (which ended in a tie and was broken by Mayor Marie Galate against streaming) has limited remote access to these open, public discussions, especially the upcoming budget work session. I recognize that this feels like a step backward on the transparency many of us expect and deserve. As of right now, there are no new developments or changes to the council’s decision — work sessions remain in-person only. However, the petition (started by Heather Fiore) continues to gather support, and every signature helps keep this conversation alive. Next opportunity to share your views in person: The next regular Mayor/Council Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Building (111 River Styx Road, Hopatcong, NJ). Public comment is allowed during the designated portion of the meeting (3 minutes per speaker). This is your chance to speak directly to the Mayor and Council about live streaming, transparency, or any other borough matters. Greater transparency strengthens trust — let’s keep working toward that together. Questions or additional thoughts? Feel free to reply or reach out. Jennifer A. Johnson Hopatcong Councilwoman
