Reinstate LGBTQ symbols in Blue Valley District schools
The Issue
In the Blue Valley School District, students and teachers are experiencing an erasure of a vital part of our community's identity. Recently, the district has made the disheartening decision to banish pride flags and other LGBTQ symbols from schools, enforcing their removal from classroom walls and public spaces. This decision has not only stripped visibility from the LGBTQ community but has also curtailed the right of self-expression for many students and staff.
For those in the LGBTQ community, these symbols do more than decorate our classrooms; they represent acceptance, pride, and a safe space where individuals can be themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion. Removing these symbols sends a damaging message, suggesting that our identities should be hidden or are less valid than others.
At a time when inclusivity should be prioritized, the district's actions set back the strides made in fostering an environment where every student feels seen and supported. Studies from reputable sources, such as the "U.S. National School Climate Survey," highlight that visible affirmations of LGBTQ identities help reduce anxiety, bullying, and depression among LGBTQ youth. Schools should be places of learning and support, not environments where students feel marginalized.
We propose not only reinstating pride flags and other LGBTQ symbols in all district buildings but also creating a policy that affirms the rights of students and teachers to express their identities freely and safely. This can include diversity and inclusion training for all staff, establishing LGBTQ clubs or support groups, and incorporating LGBTQ history and contributions into the curriculum.
Let us convince the Blue Valley School District that diversity and visibility strengthen our community and provide every student the opportunity to flourish. Please join us in signing this petition to reverse the district's harmful decision and reinstate the symbols that matter so greatly to our community.
