I believe in the right to a true and fair democracy. I believe in equal representation in the government. Everyone’s voices should have the right to be heard. It's this belief that compels me to take action today, for I am deeply concerned about the recent removal of Representative Justin Pearson and Justin Jones from their committee assignments in the Tennessee House.

Representative Pearson and Jones were elected by the people of their districts to be their voice, to champion their concerns, and to advocate for their needs in the halls of power. By stripping them of their committee assignments, not only do we silence them, but we also silence the thousands of people who have placed their trust in them to represent them.

Our democracy thrives on open dialogue and diverse perspectives, essential elements to a robust and fair legislative process. Committees are the backbone of legislative bodies where critical discussions, amendments, and policy decisions are made. By excluding Representative Pearson and Representative Jones, we undermine the very essence of a healthy democracy, one that is supposed to encourage debate and embrace differing viewpoints.

Tennessee has a proud tradition of standing up for justice and equality, principles that are enshrined in our democratic fabric. But when we remove an elected official like Representative Pearson and Jones from their committee duties, we are failing to uphold these values. Historically, moments of disagreement and debate have led to progress and greater understanding. To fulfill the promise of democracy, we must ensure all elected officials can contribute fully, even when they dissent.

We respectfully urge the leadership of the Tennessee House to reverse this decision and reinstate Representative Justin Pearson and Jones to their committee roles. In doing so, we will send a powerful message that Tennessee values every voice and stands firm in its commitment to a democratic process that is fair, transparent, and inclusive.
