The Issue

Roosevelt Middle School had felt safe and secure to the staff and students prior to this school year, and much of this is because of the dedication of Jeremy DeMello, the School’s Resource Officer (SRO) for the last eight years. Under his watch, our school became a positive environment where students were protected, and their well-being was prioritized—both physically and mentally.

For countless parents, students, and faculty members, Officer DeMello was a trusted mentor and an active member of the school community. His ability to connect with young people made him an indispensable part of our team; always visible in the hallways, preventing problems and de-escalating situations. He created additional after-school clubs and was also involved in many school-based events on his own time and without compensation.

In a time when the role of SROs is being criticized, it is vital to discern the impact and effectiveness of individual officers. Jeremy DeMello exemplifies the positive influence and change that a committed SRO can provide. He was born to do this job, and removing him from this role only does harm to the students and staff who count on him for safety and guidance.

We urge the Chief of Police of New Bedford to reconsider his decision and reinstate Jeremy DeMello as the SRO at Roosevelt Middle School. His return will restore the confidence and the peace of mind that our students and faculty have valued and missed for so long.
