Why this petition matters

Started by Dominic Myatt

Earlier today Hackney Council issued a notice explaining that Hackney Carnival, a celebration of Caribbean culture, would be cancelled due to the death of the Queen. It was due to take place on Sunday 11th after Covid-19's disruption to the in-person event two years running.

People from the local community have spent countless hours and money on preparing for this event which will now go to waste. There is also no guarantee as of yet if the event could even be rescheduled this year.

This is wrong decision to make - local small businesses will suffer and people who are already struggling. If the council wishes to mark the death of the Queen then an appropriate act of remembrance during the event would be a more measured approach.

An attempt was made to make an official petition on the parliament website but petitions have also been suspended for the time being... due to the death of the Queen.
